“There are so many differences in the world around you it becomes really easy to notice the things other people have that you don't. But can I tell you what you do have? You have a mom and a grandma who love you very very much.”
- Grandma
Big Ideas: To understand that everyone’s family is different.
At the end of this lesson students will be able to:
Define what a family is and describe a variety of families
Identify important features (like love and caregiving) that are a part of all families
Understand different structure and diversity within a family
Materials: What is a Family Worksheet
Now that they have seen the show, have a discussion about what family is. Pose the following questions:
What makes up a family?
How can someone who looks different be the same as me?
How do you feel when you visit a family that is different from yours?
What does it mean to accept someone’s differences?
How can I be more accepting of someone who is different from me?
Have your students fill out our What is a Family Worksheet.
Have your students share their answers. Connect your discussion to the play by asking:
How are Sarah and Violet’s families different? How are they the same?
How do Makani and Kainoa create a family within the play? What does this teach Sarah about her own family?
